GI CR: MUST DO – Pre – Assumptions – What is an Assumption

An assumption is defined as an unstated idea that is required for the argument to hold.

Given this definition, an assumptions needs to satisfy the following three properties:

  1. It must provide new information
  2. It must support the argument i.e. after reading the assumption statement, your belief in the conclusion should increase.
  3. It must be necessary for the argument to hold. In other words, if we negate an assumption, the argument ceases to make sense or the argument breaks down.

Thus, when you evaluate options in an assumption question, evaluate them on the above three properties.
